Why you should drink more water
We highly encourage a healthy water intake, as there are so many scientific reasons why water is so important!
Water is a natural appetite suppressant. Water can take space in the stomach and signal brain fullness. It can tame hunger and cravings. Usually when we feel hungry, in reality we are just thirsty.
Water helps remove waste from the body. When we are dehydrated, our digestion cannot function correctly. Water helps our kidneys property filter toxins and wastes, so our organs retain nutrients and electrolytes. When we are dehydrated, our kidneys retain water and it can also result in constipation, headaches, increased sugar cravings, and compromised immunity. When our digestion isn’t functioning properly, it can result in feeling bloated and tired, and can also result in an increase in our weight and inches.
Drinking water replaces ‘liquid calories.’ Not sure about you, but we would much rather eat our calories than drink a bunch of calories that are typically found in sweetened coffee drinks, soda, alcohol, and juice.
Water intake helps with exercise and recovery. Water helps muscles, tissues, and joints to move correctly. Dehydration increases the risk of muscle cramping, fatigue, and poor recovery. If you live in a warm climate or during the hot summer months, it is important to increase overall water intake and utilize an electrolyte replacement.
A good target for daily water intake is to drink half of your body weight in ounces.
Some tips for increasing daily water intake:
Drink 20 oz. of water upon waking in the morning and before your cup of coffee.
Drink at least 12 oz. of water before each meal.
Carry a refillable water bottle with you at all times. Using a straw or cup with water measurements on it can help keep you on track throughout the day.
Keep an eye on caffeine and alcohol intake, since they are both diuretics, so stick to decaf if that’s your jam.
Add electrolytes, fresh fruit or herbs, or apple cider vinegar, or BCAA’s. Tea, flavored sparkling water and drink mixes such as Crystal Light and True Lemon/Lime can be helpful with increasing consumption.
